Fowey Christmas Market 2008
The Fowey Chamber of Commerce decided in 2005 that it would be good if something could be done to encourage people to come to Fowey to do their Christmas shopping. Since that time, the Chamber has been incredibly supportive, a true indication of the progressive attitude they have towards improving the visitor experience in Fowey. The first Fowey Christmas Market, held in 2005, was such a success with visiting and local traders, that the organising committee more than doubled the size to accommodate all the traders who want to attend, and added an extra day. In 2006, we erected 3 marquees on Town Quay and had over 60 traders. The Town Hall houses 18 traders who are members of the Fowey River Crafts Association, selling a superb variety of locally-made craft items. The quality of the food, drink and crafts on sale has been superb. It was so encouraging to hear such comments as 'next year, I plan to do all my Christmas shopping in Fowey', and to learn that many hotel rooms have been booked by people wanting to visit Fowey to do their Christmas shopping in December 2007. In 2007, there were 70 visiting traders, carefully selected to provide a fantastic variety of locally-made food, drink and crafts. To make the experience even better for traders and visitors, the marquees were be heated. Unfortunately, we had to postpone the event in 2007 by one week due to the severe weather forecast over the Market weekend, meaning that we were unable to erect the marquees. The event was held the following week and was a great success. We are working on contingency plans this year so that whatever the weather throws at us, the event will go ahead as planned
As a result of the success of the Fowey Christmas Market, Dibb Events was asked to run 3 events in 2008 at Trelissick Gardens, owned by The National Trust, on the following dates:
September 6th and 7th
December 13th and 14th - a Christmas Market
May 4th & 5th Dibb Events ran the annual Food Fayre at Godolphin House, near Helston. This property had only recently been bought by The National Trust. The Food Fayre has grown into one of the premier food events in Cornwall. The event attracted some 4500 people, and was very popular with traders and visitors alike. Entertainment for the whole family was organised by Dibb Events, including pony and trap rides, live music, renaissance dancing, a man-powered roundabout for children, face painting, and story telling.
Other events for 2008 include a 2-day event, run for the first time on Events Square, Falmouth, which was a great success despite nearly 80 mph winds threatening to blow down the marquee. We are discussing the possibility of making these events a regular part of the summer season in Falmouth.
